Rhubarb extract is Rheum palmatum L, a plant of the Polygonaceae family. Extracts of dried roots and rhizomes. Free anthraquinones: rhein, emodin, soil emodin, aloe emodin, emodin methyl ether; Combined anthraquinone (more content) fresh rhubarb can be gradually oxidized to anthraquinone by anthracol or entl during storage.Chinese Pharmacopoeia uses high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC method) to determine the content of total anthraquinones such as aloe emodin, rhein, emodin, chrysophanol and emodin methyl ether in medicinal materials, requiring that the total amount should not be less than 1.5% of dried medicinal materials. The purgative effect of rhubarb was sennosides, and the purgative effect of free anthraquinone was weak. The antibacterial effect of rhubarb was stronger in aloe emodin, emodin and rhein, which had inhibitory effect on most gram-positive bacteria.
